Create distance from anxious thinking

When to use this method

When anxiety sounds like certainty.

Your mind keeps saying:

“I’m going to embarrass myself.”

“Something bad is going to happen.”

“I know this won’t work.”

The problem is that anxiety presents these thoughts as facts.

This method helps you remember that they are stories your anxious brain is telling—not necessarily reality.

Why it helps

Create a little psychological distance.

When we automatically believe every anxious thought, our brain stays in threat mode.

Simply naming the thought creates a little psychological distance.

Instead of saying

“Something terrible is going to happen.”

Begin saying

“My anxiety is telling me that something terrible is going to happen.”

That tiny change can reduce the emotional intensity.

Try it now

Name the thought, then take one step.

01

Write down your anxious thought.

Example:

I’m going to fail this presentation.
02

Begin the sentence with:

My anxiety is telling me that…

Now it becomes:

My anxiety is telling me that I’m going to fail this presentation.
03

Ask yourself:

Is this a fact?Or is this a prediction?
04

Finish with:

I don’t know exactly what will happen.

But I can handle one step at a time.

Remember

You don’t need to argue with every anxious thought.
You only need to remember that thoughts aren’t always facts.
